For the Hummingbird

You do not have to work
at the pace of a hummingbird’s flutter,
even they stop in quiet moments
of the summer heat,
to rest on a wire of our old Christmas lights,
high above any stress from below,
and shaded by trees from the constantly burning sun
that reminds you that the day is ever shortening.
Even the hummingbird rests,
when they know
they have at most
this year to live.
